IB Maths AA HL Tutor, Online
AA HL is the most demanding of the four IB Maths courses. I tutor it one-to-one and online, with the proof, calculus, complex numbers, vectors, and Paper 3 problem-solving that make it hard. I sat AA HL myself, Paper 3 included, and scored a 7 in it, part of 7·7·7 across my Higher Levels. I read Maths and Physics at the University of St Andrews.

Why AA HL is the hard one
Of the four IB Maths courses, AA HL goes deepest. It expects you to prove results, not just use them, and it pushes calculus, complex numbers, and vectors well past Standard Level. On top of the two core papers it adds Paper 3, an extended problem-solving paper that drops you into unfamiliar territory and asks you to work your way out.
The parts that trip students up
Proof
Induction and proof by contradiction are new ways of thinking, not just new techniques. We work through what a rigorous argument needs.
Calculus, deeper
Integration by parts and substitution, differential equations, Maclaurin series. The methods stack, and small gaps compound, so we close them in order.
Complex numbers
Moving between Cartesian, polar, and Euler form, and using De Moivre's theorem for powers and roots.
Vectors in three dimensions
Lines and planes, intersections, and the geometry behind the algebra.
Paper 3
The hardest paper to revise for, because it is the least predictable. We practise the habits that travel: reading a long unfamiliar question, finding the first foothold, and building across the parts.
Exam technique for the three papers
AA HL is examined over three papers. Paper 1 is non-calculator, testing clean by-hand technique. Paper 2 allows a calculator and rewards knowing when to reach for it. Paper 3 is extended and exploratory. We prepare for each on its own terms.
Why a maths and physics graduate
At the toughest level the maths gets heavy and applied, and that is where a physics background helps. Modelling, problem-solving, and calculus used in anger are the daily business of a physics degree, and they are what Paper 3 is built on. In over four years of teaching I have worked with more than 25 IB Maths students. Read messages from families.
Alongside the course
AA HL tutoring runs as ongoing online lessons, one-to-one. AA HL students also have the exploration to write, so I offer coaching on your exploration.
Common questions
How is AA HL different from AA SL?
HL covers everything SL does and adds harder content: more proof, deeper calculus, complex numbers, vectors, and the extra Paper 3.
Do you cover Paper 3?
Yes. It is the paper most students worry about. I sat Paper 3 myself, so I coach it from experience.
Is AA HL harder than AI HL?
They are different. AA HL is more abstract and proof and calculus heavy; AI HL leans on modelling and technology. AA HL is usually the one students find most demanding.
I am thinking of moving down to SL. Can you help me decide?
Yes. We can look honestly at where you are and what your course needs.
